A true personal saviour of mine. I wouldn't have had anywhere near as much inspiration without him. I probably wouldn't have got my shit together as much either.

Thanks Bob.

You do magick Bob!

You revealed and then so elegantly annihilated my reality tunnel. You did so with optimism, humor, and grace absent condescension.

Thank you for revealing what "is" neither here nor there.

Thank you for squashing my I, revealing all inside and around that 'seems'.

I think therefore I am? ... Not anymore, not for 'I'.

We observe, we communicate, therefore we grow.

We love you. We miss you. We strive and rise to reach you.

Send us a postcard.

I’ve been around, I seen the town take its fee

I seen the breeze hit the sea, looking for something to be

I’ve fucked around and done a lot of silly things

Running far in the dark, trying hard to outrace me

And as I watch the fading sunset comb its fingers

through the hair of the air dying free

I wonder to myself if I will be so beautiful and brave

When the reaper comes for me

You can’t hold a sound or its proud energy

In your hands but you can dance if you’re bold enough you see

And where the ground meets a boundless sky of dreams

You can go there you know if you close your eyes and leap

And as I watch the trees of august drop their tumbling tragic leaves

In broken wreaths on the dying green

I cannot help but wonder to myself what I will someday be
When the reaper comes for me.

But enough poetry. Thank you, farewell, goodnight. I like to imagine that there is some part of you that is now aware just how many of us are still down here hoping and focusing for the fufillment of whatever the hell it is you may desire at this point of your journey.

See you in the lifestream...

SUGGESTED NARRATION:

Counterculture icon ROBERT ANTON WILSON passed away quietly in his Capitola home on January 11th. Wilson, perhaps best known as co-author of the 1975 cult classic novel "Illuminatus!," wrote more than 30 books and several plays, and was the subject of a 2003 documentary, "Maybe Logic." A long-time friend of such counterculture figures as Timothy Leary, Paul Krassner and George Carlin, Wilson recently gained notoriety as a vocal proponent of medical marijuana, which he claimed relieved the pain and suffering of his Post-Polio Syndrome. Robert Anton Wilson was 74 years old.

Around dawn yesterday, when Pope Bob started frolicking with the Sex Goddessess aboard the Escape Vessels, my computer happened to be employed in uploading to Usenet group alt.binaries.multimedia.slack the 10 minute video of him in the Hour of Slack radio studio (from 1987, same as the one in the course).

I was sound asleep at the time. But when I got up, I opened my t-shirt drawer full of ten zillion weirdo t-shirts, and the one on top JUST HAPPENED (??!?!?) to be my SINGLE Pope "Bob" shirt. Quite a while after I read of his Advance Personal X-Day I looked in the mirror and realized Pope Bob was looking back at me from my shirt.

That old joker!

As sad as it is to hear of his departure from our plane of existance, we must remember he has not left us. He will be forever remembered as a revolutionary, a free thinker, a teacher, a friend... I never met him, nor did I ever communicate with him... but he and I, just as him and yourself are connected... a body may expire, but the energy that is that person's essence can never be destroyed... he is now once more with the sea of information and potential that we are all a part of... may he rest in peace knowing that he achieved his dream of immortality, even though his body did not... he has passed a horizion, but his information will never be lost... he showed me and opened my I... and he will influence my life until I join him...

All Hail Eris!

How is it that I only meet you after you have gone? I linked to your blog from a friends. I only logged on LJ tonight to post some thoughts on how silly and pointless life seems, at least I've felt that way since I lost my Dad. Then I read your thoughts. Somehow I think in a odd, inner connected way that is unintelligible to this mere mortal, I was meant to find it. Now I'm off to read more, and find out what is up with flying lasagna. Good journey to you Bob, where ever you may be.

Words can't do some feelings justice.

I'm just going to think my goodbye instead...

Having been lucky enough to be shown our roads by Bob, we should all resolve to drag ourselves and as many others as we have the energy for out of this quagmire. Like a bunch of little Bobs. We shouldn't feel obliged to grow a beard though and we should try not to be preachy or too certain of our opinions. We should all just chat about stuff with the people we know, be optimistic and keep on thinking (even when it seems sticky) Minds are highly elastic freestyle groove machines. One jewel in many.

(Hope that didn't seem too preachy, just feel that we are all very lucky and this great fella deserves a legacy we can all be proud of) Let's do it.

Hip Hip Hooray !! Well Aye !!!

Anonymous said...

To Bob's family and friends, thank you for loving him and being there for him. Take care of yourselves.

In Prometheus Rising (p.258) Bob quotes the Belgian physicist Ilya Prigogine:
"A dissipative structure is highly complex and therefore highly unstable. The more complex it is, the more unstable it is, mathematically, certainly; and the more unstable, the more likely it is to change--to evolve.
All dissipative structures are teetering, perpetually, between self-destruction and re-organisation on a higher level of information (coherence)."

Farewell Bob, we'll miss your wise and beautiful words. You taught us to take nonsense seriously, or was it the other way around? Your work will live on, at a higher level of information, guiding us all forward.
I'm sure, one day our pineal glands will find the right frequency, and we'll hear from you again.

Goodbye Robert Anton Wilson, and give Eris a big kiss for me...

Bob, not only did I read nearly every word of yours published, but had the pleasure of seeing you speak several times, and actually sharing a conversation with you once. Thanks for everything, and thanks for the incredible laugh I had at that pizza place in Norwood, where I tried to read that story of the Texas "Yellow Dog Democrat" sheriff who decided to kill his wife with nightshade. I kept falling off the chair. 5 17 23 Thou art goddess.

Anonymous said...

Thank you for what you have written; thank you for who you are. And let's all remember to Stick Apart, in the Name of Eris. Good-bye.

"Every fact of science was once Damned. Every invention was considered impossible. Every discovery was a nervous shock to some orthodoxy. Every artistic innovation was denounced as fraud and folly. The entire web of culture and ‘progress’, everything on earth that is man-made and not given to us by nature, is the concrete manifestation of some man's refusal to bow to Authority." -- Robert Anton Wilson, with Robert Shea, Illuminatus! Trilogy

"It was Greg Hill and Kerry Thornley who founded the Discordian Society, which is based on the worship of Eris, the Goddess of Chaos, discord, confusion, bureaucracy and international relations. They have no dogmas, but one catma. The catma is that everything in the universe relates to the number 5, one way or another, given enough ingenuity on the part of the interpreter. I found the Discordian Society to be the most satisfactory religion I had ever encountered up until that point, so I became a Discordian Pope. This is done by excommunicating all the Discordian Popes you can find and setting up your own Discordian Church. This is based on Greg's teaching that we Discordians must stick apart." -- Robert Anton Wilson

Time to Die

Ikkyu, the Zen master, was very clever even as a boy. His teacher had a precious teacup, a rare antique. Ikkyu happened to break this cup and was greatly perplexed. Hearing the footsteps of his teacher, he held the pieces of the cup behind him. When the master appeared, Ikkyu asked: "Why do people have to die?"

"This is natural," explained the older man. "Everything has to die and has just so long to live."

Ikkyu, producing the shattered cup, added: "It was time for your cup to die."

"Enjoying the Game?"

I didn't really understand what he meant, but smiled, nodded, and laughed a bit, falling back into the crowd unsure.

These days, many years later, I'm just starting to learn how to enjoy "the Game." But, I don't think I would have realized there were no rules without to my game of life if I hadn't found R.A.W.

things will go on as they always have,
getting weirder all the time.

Bob,

You enchanted us with your humour like no other philosopher in history and, in my opinion, presented the golden key for humanity in these insane times. To be selfless enough not to take yourself seriously by giving up the ridiculous 'I am right' position would practically end all wars.

Love ya Bobby boy,

Al

Im searching for the next genius, visionary, inspirational eye-opener to pick up a pen and laughingly remove the blinds..
RAW conveyed to me that which noone else could. Ideas and attitudes to advance this backwards heap of rock, and all of its inhabitants. In that we are all wardens of the planet, RAW is a warden of humankind who has achieved immortality through written word and influenced minds.
KEEP IT ROLLING!

Wavy Gravy once asked a Zen Roshi, "What happens after death?"
The Roshi replied, "I don't know."
Wavy protested, "But you're a Zen Master!"
"Yes," the Roshi admitted, "but I'm not a dead Zen Master."

Thank you for firing me through a Russian roulette of reality tunnels towards the infinite road of wisdom. I'm doubtful that this would have happened had you not introduced me to my beautiful donkey.

Thanks for everything!

Farewell, all the best in your new adventures!

All Hail Eris!

Good Lord Bob! What a crazy thing to go and do.

Thanks for keeping me sane when I 'remembered' my 'alien abductions', that was much appreciated.

And I'm sorry those fuckers that made millions with the Matrix movie never credited you and Robert Shea for that one!

I wish I'd known you had a blog before you left.

I have a million things I could say to you, but the main one is that I hope you presently find yourself rushing full speed towards the Burning Heart of the Infinite my friend.

Much, much love to you.

Greetings from Bulgaria!
This is coming from a dozen hearts whose beat was kinda cheered by your laughter, inspiration, love.

Head up high, Bob! No one is 'dead' today. You the least.

Love,
Ivan

Wow Bob,

I can't believe you're gone. I had the tremondous priviledge of meeting you a few times in Dallas, and then in Massachusetts, back in the 80's and early 90's.

You were the psychologist's psychologist. You helped me figure out some of the main puzzles of my life.

What a wonderful, gentle charming, intelligent man you were, (and still are, somewhere).

You and Tim Leary are probably having a heck of a laugh a how silly we are down here, with our petty worries and concerns.

Much love, and you will definitely be missed.

Love, love, love, so much love to you and your family.

It's so great to see the comment count have gone past 1,000. I do have a question. At the main site, we see: "RAW Memorial February 07
date to be announced" - So, that Feb. 07 means the date is already announced, I suppose.

you helped shape my world by helping to unshape my world. fnord indeed.

It was with some sadness that I learned of the passing of Robert A. Wilson this morning. Much like the Dadaists, Wilson helped to enlarge the reality tunnel in which I now reside. And he did it mischeiviously and most always very entertainingly. Yet his messages were not only thought provoking, they were deadly serious.

Strangely, a week or so ago, I went in search of my Cosmic Trilogies to patch up the walls of my reality tunnel. Finding vols. II and III, volume I eluded me.

But after this morning's news, I felt compelled to search again and, *cosmically*, there it was, leading me to ponder (as RAW always did), if lasagne might indeed fly!

It was with surprise and sadness that I discovered that you died, Bob. Your Schrodinger's Cat trilogy provided a very practical application and understanding of quantum mechanics and reality, which really altered my view of how I see things in life.

I often will amuse myself by thinking how different my life is because of choices I didn't make for this eigenstate.

So, I delight in the fact that, in another eigenstate, you are alive as Roberta Antonia Wilson, mother of five, grandmother of two, a happy homemaker in Iowa, living in relative obscurity.

Thank you for expanding my mind to the possibilities...all of them.

Here's an excerpt from one of Bob's webpage posts from about nine years ago (got to 'previous thoughts' to find it):

"Death makes me realize how deeply I have internalized the agnosticism I preach in all my books. I consider dogmatic belief and dogmatic denial very childish forms of conceit in a world of infinitely whirling complexity. None of us can see enough from one corner of space-time to know "all" about the rest of space-time.

Every day is full of wonderments to me: Death will probably come to me as the greatest wonderment of all."
